Watch out for hypoglycemia

Yesterday, I came inside from doing an hour's worth of yard work. I was helping my daughter with math as supper was baking in the oven, and I realized that I had a headache, and my hands were shaking. I thought that was pretty weird, as I didn't think I was that worn out from the work. Then I realized that I was experiencing hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia is something we all need to be aware of, as we are exercising and being careful of what we eat. I had eaten a good lunch but had not eaten since then. My body had used up all the energy stores with my morning work out, and my afternoon yard work. I quickly drank some of my yogurt drink, and in about 10 minutes, I was feeling much better.

Hypoglycemia is something that can affect all of us, diabetic or not. If you start to get shaky, you need a simple carbohydrate first off, and a complex carbohydrate to help carry you through. My yogurt drink had both of those for me. The sugar (sorry, guys, can't get artificial sweeteners here) started working right away, and the more complex sugars in the yogurt take effect in 15-20 minutes. The best way to avoid this is to eat regularly and have an adequate intake of protein.

This is very important, Tami...I have experienced this myself, and have learned that I can't go without food or more than a couple of hours, especially when my meals are limited in calories and carbs. Good advice..thanks for posting!

Crunch, crunch, crunch!

Keep something sugary and a dairy product on hand. That helps you recover pretty quickly. I don't have this happen often. I think the yogurt drink was perfect. It had both things I needed together in one product. You can also do sugar cubes or honey and a slice of cheese.

Right! I "suffer" from that too. It is good that we can control it with tips such as yours. It happens to me even when I eat a good breakfast. I have to make sure I have a good before I lunch. Changing the subject: Is it nice where you live? Is it very cold already? Have a good day (you are probably in bad as I write this).
